The New Regulation on Labels of Baby Formula Published by TFDA
NEW!!TFDA had integrated the original 4 labeling regulations, namely,[Labeling requirements for infant formula and follow-up infant whole formula], [Labeling requirements for Infant Milk Formula], [Labeling limitations for infant formula and follow-up infant whole formula], [Labeling requirements for specialized Nutritional infant formula and follow-up infant whole formula], into one updated regulation, namely [Labeling requirements for infant formula and follow-up infant formula]. The updated regulation was published on 1st Feb. 2023 and will be effective on 1st Jan. 2025.
The updated regulation focuses on the following revisions:
- The product that contain iron smaller than 1 mg per 100 cal. will be required to label [Please supplement iron nutrient as consume the product.]
- The statement of [breast milk is the best nutritional source for the baby] is required according to Codex Standard (CXS 72-1981). The recognizable logo of mother and baby image is still required.
- The additional descriptions on the storage methods for before opening and after opening, the usage instructions and dosage, follow the recommendations of medical personnel or nutritionist for consuming the formula and consumption ways, all labeling requirements are needed to be clear and printed on the container or package, the boiled warm water and sterilized container should be employed as preparing the formula.
- The descriptions/terms as [human milk similar], [breast milk similar], [better than/superior to human milk] or any imply/hint the same are not allowed. Any baby logo/image/picture are not also allowed, as well as the logo/image/picture that imply/hint the product is the idea one for baby.
TFDA reminds that the infant formula and the follow-up infant formula for under one year old will need to be registered with TFDA before launch on the market. TFDA also reminds the parents that choose the formula alternatives as breast milk replacement should consult with medical personnels/nutritionists.
