On July 3, 2025, Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), through the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), officially announced the addition of “joint health maintenance” as an approved health benefit under the Health Food Control Act. The TFDA simultaneously released the Evaluation Method for Joint Health Maintenance Claims for Health Foods, outlining the scientific testing and human study requirements necessary to substantiate such claims.

According to the new regulation, companies intending to market products with joint health claims must complete human intervention studies that comply with TFDA’s prescribed methodology. Products verified by scientific evidence may then be submitted for official Health Food certification. Any unapproved products falsely claiming joint health benefits will face penalties of up to three years’ imprisonment and fines up to NT$1 million.

In other words, general dietary supplements imported into Taiwan may no longer claim any joint health functions unless they undergo the official health food evaluation and approval process. If such claims exist on labeling or marketing materials, they must be removed or replaced with fully approved wording.
